Church of God Mission

Roatan, Honduras

Newsletter August 2005

We made it back to Honduras August the 6th. We enjoyed being with friends, family, and Saints in the States this summer. We attended campmeetings at both Guthrie, Oklahoma and Monark Springs Missouri. It is really an encouragement to be in these meetings.

Upon returning, we found that bats had taken up residence in the school and the mission house was infested with termites. The bats are gone and the termite poison has temporarily solved the problem, but not before they damaged furniture, books, cardboard boxes, and the framing of the house. Some in the local congregation showed their hospitality by cleaning our house before we returned and having a meal ready for us when we arrived from the airport.

Our cat was quite a bit skinnier when we returned. I am not sure if that is because they had a lean summer or if it is because they don't believe in wasting much food on animals. He is a good lizard catcher, however, and can survive on his own.

We noticed improvements - the chapel was painted and the mission truck had many of the dents removed. The benches in the back of the truck were repaired and a wooden floor was installed in the bed of the truck that had rusted through. A wooden bumper replaced the rusted, torn up bumper which had been removed some time ago. It is not unusual for us to haul a dozen people in the back of the mission truck, a small Nissan. Few congregation members have their own vehicles, so transportation is provided to and from meeting. Those who live in the village here simply walk to meeting.

Kaylee had her first day of English school. She was excited, getting her own uniform and desk at school. She wants me to enroll her in the Spanish school too. I plan to try to get her enrolled there.

We took a shipment to port in Alabama this year instead of Miami. The main contents of the shipment are food for our family throughout the year, food for the upcoming meeting here, building supplies for the school and chapel addition, school supplies, and donated fabric and sewing machines. It was rainy weather during the time we were in Louisiana, but we are thankful that we managed to move the shipment during intervals between rain storms and that the shipping price was given to us at a discount.

We have electricity and water outages, reminding us that we are no longer in the States. It's good to be back though.

Sunday afternoon we went with the young people handing out tracts in a nearby Spanish village. The village is primitive, with some of the houses constructed of sticks and mud, and food cooked over wood fires with chickens running around in the yards. Women carry laundry in tubs on their heads to streams and scrub them by hand. Someone in a newly built chapel there expressed an interest in having fellowship between our congregations. It is something we need to follow up on. We want to find people that are hungry for the truth. So many are satisfied with a religious experience rather than true salvation from sin and the world.

I have ordered a plastic septic tank and plan to get the new septic system for the chapel and school in the ground before the wet season comes. We had an awful time during the wet season trying to build a concrete septic tank for the mission house. It was like digging a hole in a mud pit - the walls kept collapsing.

Brother Dennis has his boat out of the sea for repairs and painting. He has built fish traps from chicken wire and small tree trunks. It will be interesting to go with him and see what he gets, but he is waiting until his boat is ready.

We are planning our second tent meeting here Oct. 2-9, 2005. We really enjoyed the last meeting and look forward to the one coming up. We invite all the Saints interested in coming to join us. If you do plan to come, please let us know as soon as possible that you are coming so we know how to make sleeping arrangements and other plans. In the last meeting, we had several saved and baptized. The ones here really enjoy visitors coming from the States.

We appreciate the support and prayers from the States very much.

Christian Love,
Doug and Lenita Wall and Family
